Although I don’t have a record player (yet), I picked up this Talking Heads album at a local record shop for $1! I got it because the cover was so cluttered and the drawing style on it was so interesting. When I got home and got a better look at the cover, I liked it even more. There is so much going on; the sketchy drawing of the band members, people riding cheetahs, clouds with faces on them, and a variety of song lyrics. I think that some of the most interesting graphic design can come out of just doodling and this is a good example of that. Another interesting part of this album is the back which is a photograph of the band with all of their out of this world clothing.

early american design motifs

A few years ago I picked up a book called “Early American Design Motifs” at a used book store in Vermont for only three dollars. The entire book is filled with only pictures and designs (my kind o book), from the late 1700′s to the 1900′s. The book gives simple line drawings of the patterns and designs that were used in early American life. The designs all have a common theme of nature which includes, floral, landscapes, birds, animals, borders, and miscellaneous designs such as alphabets, geometric, and historical metal work. The book also gives color photo examples of how there designed were used in everyday objects. This book isn’t just something interesting to look at, but serves as inspiration for any of my projects. The designs in this book at universal symbol that can be used for almost any application.

After my family and I moved to Lancaster, PA, my mother got a job working at Justin Boots. I went to work with her almost everyday over the summer where I learned to hate cowboy boots more than anything in the world. I hated the way they looked and the people who came in to spend hundreds of dollars on these hideous shoes.

How can people wear these things for fashion? The original boot had a purpose to them. Cowboy boots were riding boots, historically worn by cowboys. They are normally made from cowhide leather but are also sometimes made from exotic skins such as alligator, snake, ostrich, lizard, elk, and many other animals. Until the industrial age, these boots were individually handmade in many different styles, depending on culture. Early cowboy boot designs, along with other cowboy accoutrements, were also heavily influenced by the vaquero tradition imported from Spain to the Americas, dating back to the early 16th century.

Later, the industrial revolution allowed some styles of boots to be mass-produced. The American-style boot was taken up by bootmakers in the cattle ranching areas of Texas, Oklahoma, and Kansas. Two of the best known early bootmakers of the era were Charles Hyer of Hyer Brothers Boots and H. J. “Big Daddy Joe” Justin of Justin Boots.

Even though the cowboy boot has a huge history and meaning, I still hate these boots more than any other shoe. But what I found so interesting is the same companies that make these vulgar boots, also make my favorite lacer boots. These boots are like nothing that is produced by any other shoe company. These lacer’s look like something that a stylish 1900′s girl would wear on the farm.

The specific ones I own, that my mother gave to me, are from a company called Laredo’s. This company was named after Laredo, Texas. She purchased these boots at another Justin Boot Store. Even though I still think that cowboy boots are still really ugly, I have a better appreciation for them after finding out about the history.

Esao Andrews

Although Esao Andrews’ work has been around for over a decade, his work has become notability more popular since he started to design album covers for the band Circa Survive. His paintings were featured on the covers of all three of their albums, Juturna, On Letting Go, & Blue Sky Noise.

Most of Andrews’ paintings are done with oil paints on wood panels. Many of his works feature distorted fantasies, nude woman, strange creatures, and melting objects. His style falls under gothic grotesque, erotic, and very surrealistic.

The cover of On Letting Go (with the hot air balloon) is one of the most iconic Circa Survive albums. Not only was it their return to the music scene, but caused a great stir in the art and music community. The image depicts a small girl whose head is englufed in the flames of the hot air balloon. Many fans responded to this in a positive way because it was something so vivid, beautiful and morally wrong to have a small girl whose head is on fire. Another very interesting aspect to this album was their cd booklet which featured this illustration and also a man version of it on the back (also painted by Esao). The booklet takes a step back as you turn the each page, progressively turning the painting into the original linework and removing the paint. The booklet is so visually appealing, you may forget it is to all promote Circa Survive’s album.

With the cd’s immediate popularity musically and artisticly, Circa Survive sold over 52,000 copies in it’s first week alone. The Esao balloon has become so popular that many have gotten it permanently tattooed on their body…
